We are learning a new language! A group of 17 teachers and teacher aides have been busy learning a new skill by undertaking an Introductory 8 week Auslan course after school each week. We are learning to communicate in sign language and this new skill is being transferred into some of the classrooms. Also each week on Assembly the whole school is learning a few Auslan signs and it’s great to be greeted by students using these signs as you walk around the school. Our Auslan course will help open up the channels of communication for families of the hearing impaired, members of the deaf community or their workplace colleagues. Whether it is simply saying hello, finger spelling your name or counting, sign language bridges two different worlds. The Auslan course offers a basic cultural and historic understanding of the deaf community.
