English as an Additional Language / Dialect

EAL/D Co-ordinator - Gayle Kimmins

English language support is available for eligible newly arrived children for whom English is a second language and for children, born in Australia, who have a non-English speaking background.

MacGregor Primary School English as an Additional Language / Dialect (EAL/D) support staff consists of four qualified and experienced part-time teachers and five part-time highly competent teacher-aides. A number of our staff are bi-lingual and can offer bi-lingual language support to students and parents if necessary in Mandarin, Cantonese, and Korean. EAL/D staff members perform many important functions related to communication within the school.  They liaise between parents, teachers, administrators and students to assist each individual child's learning. We also have a number of bi-lingual volunteers who assist our students with one-on-one support for developing language and reading skills.
Children from newly arrived families, who usually have little English, are entitled to up to three years of specialist EAL/D support, which is funded by the Government.  The aims of this support are to aid the adjustment to a new school system and culture and to assist children to eventually function proficiently in mainstream classes within the school.
Children born in Australia, but who speak a language other than English, are also entitled to help for up to three years from the commencement of their schooling.  It has been recognized that many children whose major exposure to English occurs at school, often need some additional support in their early years of schooling.
EAL/D support is given to individual children, to small groups and to students working in the classroom.  Advisory support is also given to classroom teachers and the EAL/D support staff ensures that the needs of EAL/D children are identified and appropriate support is provided. EAL/D programs are always closely linked to what is taking place in the classroom.
